# Roles and permissions

> Who can see what in your salon, from the front desk to the books.

Permissions answer one question over and over: should this person see
this? Sable answers it with roles, so a stylist sees their column and
their clients, and the money stays where it belongs.

## The roles

| Role | What they see and do |
| -------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Owner** | Everything: money, settings, team, the works. |
| **Admin** | Runs the salon day to day: calendar, clients, team management, without owning the business's financial controls. |
| **Stylist** | Their own calendar, their clients, their earnings. Not the salon's finances or settings. |
| **Stylist (booth renter)** | A stylist who runs their own book inside your space, with rent tracked separately. |
| **Front desk** | Books, checks in, and checks out on behalf of everyone, without access to business financials. |

Roles live on the **Staff** tab of **Team**, where each person's role,
booth-renter status, time mode, and commission arrangement are visible in
one roster.

## Invite your team

Bringing someone in takes under a minute, right from the **Staff** tab:

1. In **Invite a teammate**, enter their email address.
2. Pick their role. The list shows exactly the roles you're able to grant,
and handing out admin-level access stays with the owner.
3. Select **Send invite**.

They get an email with a secure link, choose their own password, and appear
in your roster the moment they accept, with the role you chose already in
place.

Every invite you send sits in **Pending invites** until it's accepted, so
you always know who has joined and who could use a nudge. Invites stay open
for 7 days. Cancel one any time from its row; the old link stops working
immediately. If an invite expires, cancel it and send a fresh one to the
same address.

## Custom roles

When the built-ins don't match how your salon divides responsibility (a
senior stylist who also manages inventory, a bookkeeper who needs reports
and nothing else), custom roles let you shape access to fit. Each custom
role appears in the roster like any other.

## Rules of thumb

* **Give the least that works.** It's easier to grant more later than to
claw back access someone's gotten used to.
* **Booth renters are marked as booth renters.** The flag isn't cosmetic:
rent tracking, their own book, and their earnings boundaries all hang
  off it.
* **The role is the boundary, not trust.** Everyone's trustworthy until
the day the phone gets stolen; roles keep a bad day small.

## What this connects to

* Commission arrangements and time modes per person:
  [Commissions, time, rent, and payroll](/guides/team/commissions-time-rent-and-payroll)
* What clients see never depends on roles: your
  [booking page](/getting-started/publish-online-booking) shows services
and times, not your org chart.
